Never Too Old

Bible Study Corner

Psalm 71:17-18 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. 18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

In Psalm 90:10 we are told “ The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” As we age we realize the general truth of this. The hills get steeper and the stride shortens. The strength of the body fades but the will to keep on doesn’t have to. The ever young soul and mind is trapped in an aging and failing body.

How many times have we witnessed defeat in the elderly. Many times they will tell you that “I just ain’t no good to nobody anymore” and they just give up. Folks if you are a born again child of God there is no place to quit. God will use you until you are finally “cut off” and “fly away”.

One of the greatest marks of a dedicated Christian is a desire to keep on keeping on for the Lord. A desire to live just to keep on serving Him and introducing others to Him. The Psalmist reflects this in Psalm 71. He said “forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation”. I have grandchildren coming up. I need to be a witness to them about Jesus Christ. I need to be an example to them of what they should be when they grow old. I don’t need to quit as long as someone can get something from my teaching. There is no place to quit.

There are young people in my Church that I need to be an example for. They need me as an example of a person to pattern their lives after.

How many of us have looked through the names in the Bible and found names of people that have stood the tests that came before them in old age and were able to testify to the goodness and greatness of God. Abraham was 70 yrs old (Gen. 12:4) when God first called him and he left his homeland. He put one foot in front of another and went to a land he had never seen except in the promises of God. Moses was 80 (Ex. 7:7) when God sent him back to Egypt to deliver his people. Joshua was 80 (Joshua 14:7,10) when he led Israel across the Jordan river to receive the promises. Anna was at least in her 90’s yet was still serving God day and night in the Temple when Jesus’ mother and Joseph brought Him to the temple for His circumcision. John the Apostle was an old man when he penned Revelation. We can be the same kind of witnesses in our sunset years.

When you have the recklessness and desires of youth behind you and the experience and maturity of old age is upon you then you are ripe for service to God. Use the wisdom you have gained through experience to show and tell others the Good Way. Tell them how many times God has brought you through tough times. You may not be able to keep up with the younger generation physically but as long as you draw breath you can show forth the praises of God in your life. I believe God will use you as long as you are willing to be used of God.

March On

It is with all my heart and soul that I will
forever give thanks to Him for He has
freed me from prison and rescued me
from certain death. My heart & soul
will march on in faith to love
and honor the true Son
of our merciful
Heavenly
Father.

Judges 5:21
O my soul, march on with strength.

My Father’s Business

I must be about my Father’s business
Our Savior did say
When Mary questioned Him
That long ago day

I came to do my Father’s will
Jesus did proclaim
Everywhere He went and taught
His mission was the same

Our Father, your will be done
Is how Jesus taught His disciples to pray
He taught them to do God’s will
And the Father will accept no other way

When it came the time for the cross
Jesus prayed Father your will be done
So meek and humble He went to Calvary
And the battle with Satan was won

Paul was called to be an apostle
It was the Father’s will
Peter knew it was in the plan of God
That the Father’s wishes he fulfill

John taught his hearers to walk in the light
So their joy might be full
To follow God’s divine plan
For us is most wonderful

To claim to know Him without obeying
Makes one a liar John wrote
So to be in the truth we must
Our lives to God in obedience devote

Blessed are those who do His commandments
John tells us again in Revelation
Therefore if we are about our Father’s business
We will have confidence in our salvation
